This area is best hunted by getting to a high vantage point and glassing the
draws and creek bottoms. I had been out several weekends before and glassed
a few bucks but nothing I was interested in shooting. On Friday, November 23,
the weather had turned for the worse with sleet and snow along with 20 mph
winds. I saw 2 does running for cover early in the morning so figured with the rut
coming on this might be a good place to hunt. I went back early Saturday
morning and glassed for an hour or so but saw nothing. Just as I was loading
the truck and heading to a new place I thought I would scan one more time with
my binoculars and spotted a deer about a mile away. Not sure if it was a buck or
not, I grabbed my rifle and headed back out. It took me about 45 minutes or so to
loop around where the deer was first spotted but nothing. They had moved down
into the creek bottom about 800 yards away. I moved between cedar trees to
close the distance to about 250 yards and setup my rifle and bipod. The deer
were eating acorns in a scrub oak patch so I couldn’t get a good look at his
horns. I used a grunt tube to get his attention and when he finally did step out, I
thought the rack was good and he was pretty heavy so should help fill the
freezer. First shot – MISS! He jumped back and looked around long enough to
get another round chambered. Second shot – good hit in the shoulder area and
he was down. I tagged my trophy, field dressed it, loaded into the truck then went
to the taxidermist and then the butcher!
Photos from the New Dale Pheasant and Quail Club - Not
a bad half day hunt! The dogs pointed up a bunch of birds
and I ended up with these....not to worry about the numbers
- there are no limits at New Dale!
The club will be open for pheasants and quail until March
31 so make plans to get out there for some awesome bird
hunting action!
April 4 - 7 were spent on the 7 Bar Ranch in Texas, chasing down big (and little) pigs. Here are some pics from our successful
hog hunt:
My boar weighed in at about 180 live. Myke
McCune took his beast on the final day of
hunting - good thing we had some help
getting that one in the truck!
A big congratulations to this young man with his first ever buck! Great Job!
